The High Street connector to Route 440 opened on Thursday, Feb. 19, Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz announced.
Completion of the Route 440-High Street Connector project means that drivers will have easy access from the northeast section of Perth Amboy to Route 440, and visitors to the city will have greater access to the waterfront and northeast redevelopment area. Landscaping and other minor work still needs to be done, the mayor noted.
"We wanted to open up as soon as possible to provide easy access for people traveling in and out of Perth Amboy," said Mayor Diaz.
The Route 440 exit ramps have been reconfigured to provide direct access to an extension of High Street. A former industrial roadway has been replaced and reconfigured into High Street, which now also connects to State Street. A new signalized T intersection will also facilitate traffic flow.
The speed limit for High Street is 25 mph and will be enforced, officials said.
The Route 440-High Street Connector project, which cost over $21 million, was funded by the NJ Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. Construction began in April 2007.
Construction was performed by Cruz Enterprises, LLC, and CMX Engineering oversaw the design and construction management.
