Wilentz School helps kick off Perth Amboy’s “Green and Clean Community” Program
Posted on 02/11/2009

The Robert N. Wilentz School recently launched a recycling initiative, which falls under the umbrella of the City of Perth Amboy's "Green and Clean Community" program initiated by Mayor Wilda Diaz and her administration. The school component is designed to encourage students to recycle and bring what they learned in school home so that recycling becomes second nature.

The Wilentz School, which is the first school in the city to kick off the program, has placed bins for paper in every classroom and other larger bins are in the cafetorium and hallways for cans, bottles and paper. The school recently held a program to stress the importance of recycling to the students that included speakers from the school, the Diaz Administration, the county recycling office, and Gerdau Ameristeel, which worked with the city and the school on the initiative.

"We are very pleased that the Wilentz School has kicked off this important program," said Mayor Diaz. "Partnerships are essential if we are going to achieve our city's goals, and we thank the school and the students for their part in making Perth Amboy a Green and Clean Community."

"We want students to take the recycling message home in order to save our environment," said Roland Jenkins, school principal. "We can make a difference by keeping our school clean and green."
Geri Barcheski from the Department of Public Works said in her remarks to the students that Perth Amboy recognizes that the best way to ensure the recycling program is a success is to start with the children in the schools. She said the lessons are learned and brought home and noted that family involvement is important.

Hector Bonilla from the Diaz Administration read a proclamation during the program:

WHEREAS, the City of Perth Amboy has launched a "Green and Clean Community" program; and

WHEREAS, the City of Perth Amboy will achieve its goals by working in partnerships with residents, schools and businesses; and

WHEREAS, recycling is good for the City of Perth Amboy our environment, and we believe we can all make a difference one person at a time, one city building at a time, one school at a time, and one business at a time; and

WHEREAS, the City of Perth Amboy has teamed up with the Wilentz N. School and Gerdau Ameristeel to encourage students to recycle while at school and to take that important recycling message to their homes;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wilda Diaz, Mayor of the City of Perth Amboy, do hereby take great pleasure in recognizing the outstanding efforts of the Wilentz N. School and Gerdau Ameristeel to achieve a greener and cleaner City of Perth Amboy.
