The City of Perth Amboy, in coordination with the Middlesex County Office of Health Services and the
New Jersey Department of Health, is closely monitoring the ongoing situation regarding
H5N1 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu).
What You Need to Know
- Current Status: H5N1 is widespread among wild birds and has caused outbreaks in poultry and dairy cattle across the U.S.
- Risk to Humans: The risk to the general public remains low. Most human cases in the U.S. have involved occupational exposure to poultry or dairy cattle.
How to Report Sick or Dead Birds
- Poultry & Livestock: Contact the NJ Department of Agriculture’s Division of Animal Health at 609-671-6400.
- Wild Birds: Report to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Fish and Wildlife hotline at 1-877-WARNDEP (1-877-927-6337).
- On County Property: Call the Middlesex County Office of Health Services-Environmental Division at 732-745-8480 or 732-745-3100 (After hours: 732-745-3271).
Safety Tips
- Avoid direct contact with wild or domestic birds that appear sick or have died.
- Do not handle bird carcasses without proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and masks.
