May 19, 2020 - ANTIBODY TESTING TO GET PERTH AMBOY HEALTHY

Perth Amboy, New Jersey (May 18, 2020) – The JRMC and the City of Perth Amboy are aggressively responding to the pandemic with antibody testing for its residents. With its increased capacity and resources, the JRMC is working with LabCorp to provide the most reliable tests to reach the greatest number of our residents and manage the spread. Antibody testing will now be offered to all city residents to detect if they were previously infected with COVID-19.

The JRMC’s response plan to offer antibody testing is to measure the extent of the virus in Perth Amboy. The test will serve as a tool against COVID-19 and strengthen the city’s ability to monitor its spread with residents that have mild or no symptoms. Currently, Perth Amboy has approximately 2050 positive cases. The anti-body testing will take place on Thursday, May 21, and Wednesday, May 27 at the Raritan Bay Area YMCA located on 357 New Brunswick Ave, Perth Amboy.

“We are meeting people where they are and testing residents with and without symptoms,” said John T. O’Leary, CEO of the JRMC. “It’s up to each resident in the City of Perth Amboy to get tested to protect our community. We are increasing access to antibody testing because it is the best way to beat this pandemic and get Perth Amboy healthy.”

“We want everyone in our community to get tested. That is the goal,” said Mayor Wilda Diaz. “This partnership with the JRMC is an essential part to making any changes in our community while keeping our residents safe. This is a call for action to all our residents to be tested. The more we know about this virus, the more effective we become to stopping this virus in our community."

How to register for antibody and COVID-19 testing:
  • Go online at www.jrmc.us and complete the registration.
  • The JRMC will contact to confirm a date, time, and location for appointment.
  • Hours vary between the different locations.
  • All of the Perth Amboy locations have capacity to administer antibody COVID-19 and testing in various languages.

Testing is available at no out of pocket expense and patients need to pre-register in advance for a scheduled appointment under www.jrmc.us, call (732) 376-6632 or email at ctest@jrmc.us.

April 27, 2020  - Mayor: N.J. stopped me from temporarily closing bodegas, mom-and-pop stores during coronavirus (Article from NJ.com)

The mayor of the city with the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths in Middlesex County attempted to take actions several weeks ago to slow the spread of the virus but was prohibited from doing so by state officials.

Wilda Diaz is the mayor of Perth Amboy, which as of Saturday had 56 coronavirus-related deaths and 1,323 positive cases despite its status as the sixth-most populous municipality in Middlesex County.

Weeks after Gov. Phil Murphy ordered residents to stay at home and closed all non-essential businesses, the high infection rate in Perth Amboy compelled Diaz to attempt to temporarily close down small bodegas and mom-and-pop stores to help business owners comply with social distancing protocols.  Read the full article here...
