Puerto Rico's previously issued Birth Certificates become invalid after June 30, 2010. Puerto Rico's recent legislation (Law 191 of 2009) is invalidating all Puerto Rico birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010. From this date forward, a new birth certificate must be requested from Puerto Rico Registrars' offices.This new enacted law was developed with the cooperation of the US Department of Health and the Department of Homeland Security in order to combat the fraudulent use of Puerto Rico's birth certificates.

You may also request the birth certificate online at: http://www2.pr.gov/prgoven/Pages/default.aspx. As an online applicant must have an email account to register and use the same password used to open your email in order to create an account. Visa or MasterCard is accepted. You should be authorized to process the request as per the requirements from the Demographics Registry Office which requires you to have identification proof must be in JPEG, JPG or PDF format and less than 1MB.

The date to accept Puerto Rican birth certificates has been extended to September 30, 2010.
