PERTH AMBOY GOES PINK- 5K PINK RIBBON RUN AND MOONLIGHT WALK TO BENEFIT BREAST CANCER
PERTH AMBOY - Mayor Wilda Diaz announced that the City of Perth Amboy will be sponsoring its first annual 5K Pink Ribbon Run and Moonlight Walk on Saturday, September 26, 2009. The event will take place along the city's Harborwalk in cooperation with the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure Central and South Jersey affiliate organizations. Perth Amboy's Pink Ribbon Run and Moonlight Walk is open to all and offers participants to run a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) race or choose to walk in a 1 mile health walk along our Harborwalk, and children age 13 and under can register for our children's fun run.
Perth Amboy's Pink Ribbon Run is being held to help raise the awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds to help our area healthcare providers make free breast cancer screening and education available. Run and walk participants will pay a modest $25 registration fee and children age 13 and under will be charged a $15 registration fee that will offset the event costs and provide the remaining proceeds to Central and South Jersey Susan B. Komen affiliates, who in turn will provide funding to our area health care providers.
Breast cancer is an illness that can affect any of us and often has affected a member of our family or friends. This year 6,500 women in New Jersey will be diagnosed with breast cancer and men can get breast cancer too. In 2009, the Susan B. Komen Central and South Jersey affiliates invested $1.4 million for education and screening to reach 100,000 women and $750,000 for breast cancer research. By registering for Perth Amboy's Pink Ribbon Run and Moonlight Walk you will be making an important direct investment in your own health and that of your family and friends.
"The greater chance of survivability of breast cancer is with early diagnoses. There are three simple steps for early detection - regular mammograms, clinical exams, and breast self-exams. The key to survival is early detection. This benefit run/walk will help ensure breast cancer detection and education that is available to area residents," said Mayor Diaz.
On Saturday, September 26, the Pink Ribbon Run will begin with onsite registration starting at 3:00 p.m. at the historic Ferry Slip at the foot of Smith Street and Front Street. It will then proceed with an aerobic warm up at 4:30 p.m. and the run will start at 5:30 p.m. with the health walk starting at 6:30 p.m.
"We will also be seeking corporate and business sponsorships and individuals who cannot participate can make direct donations by check or money order payable to ‘Celebrate Perth Amboy Koman Run' and mail or drop off the donation to Perth Amboy City Hall. I want to thank T.G.I. Fridays and Provident Bank who have already have joined this community effort as sponsors. Additionally, we will be partnering with many of the city organization, agencies and health care organizations and providers to make this a successful event," said Mayor Diaz.
T.G.I.Friday's has joined as a sponsor. They will donate 20 percent of the total bill of every individual that mentions the Pink Ribbon Run to the Susan Komen Race for the Cure. These donations will be collected on any Wednesday until September 30, 2009 in the Old Bridge franchise located on 1001 US Highway 9N.
Elaine Jasko, Perth Amboy City Clerk and Helga Van Eckert, Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency Executive Director, who initiated the project in Perth Amboy will serve as co-chairpersons for the event. Mayor Wilda Diaz will serve as honorary chairperson.
