Perth Amboy Auxiliary Police

This volunteer Organization is very popular and is often a stepping stone to assist the resident in deciding if this could be their chosen profession helping one attain the knowledge and experience to help truly understand the position of a Police Officer.

The Perth Amboy Auxiliary Police was established in 1946 as the Police Reserve Unit, under the State Civil Defense Act of 1942. In 1954, the Police Reserve Unit grew to a strong 100 Reserve Officers.

The reserves kept their title until 1985, when under a Resolution of the Governing Body, the City of Perth Amboy established the Auxiliary Police Unit.

Under the direct supervision of the municipal Chief of Police and related orders and directives of the Emergency Management Coordinator, the Auxiliary Police are utilized for emergencies, disasters or training missions.

Auxiliary Police Officers volunteer many community service hours. They are trained at the Middlesex County Auxiliary Police Academy and upon successful completion of an 18 week course are sworn-in as Auxiliary Police Officers.

Auxiliary Police Officers work parades, special events, downtown patrol, church traffic, crime watch patrols, bicycle patrol and have an Honor Guard Unit that performs Color Guard functions.

Qualifications for Auxiliary Police:

  • Must be citizens of the U.S. and residents of the City of Perth Amboy
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must possess a valid NJ Driver License
  • Be of good moral character and sound mind

Auxiliary Police Officers dedicating 3 years of active service have an opportunity to become paid Special Class I Police Officers.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The purpose of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course is to provide the citizens of Perth Amboy who complete this course with the basic skills that they will need to respond to the community's immediate needs in the aftermath of a large scale emergency when vital services are not immediately available. By working together, CERT can assist in saving lives and protecting property using the basic techniques in this course.

Perth Amboy Civilian Police Academy

The purpose of the Perth Amboy Police Department Civilian Police Academy is to give citizens a unique insight into the challenging world of Law Enforcement. Participants will gain an understanding of the complexity of policing in a modern society, through classroom instruction and practical, hands on application of what they have learned in simulated police/citizen encounters.

Perth Amboy Youth Understanding Police (Youth Police Academy)
The purpose of the Perth Amboy Police Department Youth Police Academy is to familiarize our youth with the inner workings of the police officers duties. The kids meet the officers who will be in charge of the academy, everyone in the class is introduced, and then they move on to various presentations. The students are introduced to different officers speaking about a variety of tasks Police Officers may face everyday. This fun interactive class is very popular so inquire now. Ages vary-- please contact Thomas Hudanish for class specifics.

Neighborhood Watch Groups

Join your neighbors and keep "watch" on your neighborhood. Since the Police can not be everywhere at all times the Community Neighborhood Watch group meets frequently with neighborhood Officers and acts as our eye's and ears for each specific neighborhood. Upon observing a situation that seems "off" or witnessing an actual crime in progress a quick phone call to Police Central will help your Police help keep you safe. Quality of Life is enhanced greatly via better communication and a clear message to the criminal to get out of our Community.
