EPA Concrete Demolition Work at Former Harry Goldberg & Sons Scrap Metal Site
EPA Concrete Demolition Work at Former Harry Goldberg & Sons Scrap Metal Site
Overview
In May 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will commence a new phase of remediation at the former Harry Goldberg & Sons Scrap Metal site in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The site, which operated as a scrap metal facility from 1929 to 1994, has a history of contamination, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead, military munitions, and suspected white phosphorous.
EPA’s Work and Upcoming Activities
The EPA will use heavy equipment to break up and remove concrete from the site. This work will occur on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents should expect loud noises during these hours due to the nature of the equipment being used.
Activity in Your Neighborhood
- Noise Impacts: Significant noise from trucks and construction machinery.
- Traffic Impacts: Increased traffic on Second Street as trucks move to and from the site. However, the street will remain open to traffic.
Contaminants at the Site
- Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs): Manufactured from 1929 until their ban in 1979, PCBs are known for their non-flammability, chemical stability, high boiling point, and electrical insulating properties.
- Military Munition Materials: Unused weapons due to malfunction or design issues.
- White Phosphorous: Highly reactive with air, used in fireworks, smoke bombs, fertilizers, and rodenticides.
