MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ – Middlesex County and Perth Amboy officials gathered on Friday, May 10 to celebrate the groundbreaking of the County’s newest pocket park located on Fayette Street in Perth Amboy. Once completed, this pocket park will boast an array of amenities including a grand gazebo, outdoor chess tables, charging stations, picnic areas, and benches — primarily designed for passive recreation.
Sharing the significance of this pocket park project for the community of Perth Amboy and the County, speakers included Board of County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios, New Jersey Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez, Middlesex County Commissioner Charles E. Tomaro, and Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin J. Caba.
“Since 2021, in close collaboration with Mayor Caba and his dedicated team, we’ve been on a journey to shape this space into a park that, in its own small way, will increase open space and help fulfill the needs of residents by providing a place to gather outdoors,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios. “Over a million dollars will be invested into this project, just another example of our County's fiscal health which is the result of deliberate and strategic decisions made with the County's long-term economic stability and success in mind, which allows us to invest our resources wisely on behalf of everyone in Middlesex County. This investment stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents and visitors alike, while also brightening up our neighborhoods.”
“Access to high quality parks and open spaces no matter how big have been proven to help families lead healthier lives,” said Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez. “I am thankful that we will have yet another park in Perth Amboy thanks to a partnership with Middlesex County to expand the city’s already impressive recreational spaces. The Fayette Street pocket park is investment in the community of Perth Amboy’s well-being, and I look forward to our families enjoying the space.”
“I am grateful for all the support we’ve received from Commissioner Director Ron Rios and all the county commissioners. Their contributions have made a big difference in our community here in Perth Amboy. In the past three years alone, they have invested millions into areas ranging from youth services and the arts to housing and vital infrastructure,” said City of Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin J. Caba. “Today, we are excited to break ground on a new pocket park, a project our partnership with the county made possible. This small but vital space will significantly benefit our residents, especially our senior citizens, providing them with a peaceful, accessible place to enjoy the outdoors and stay active. It’s a prime example of how we’re working together to improve the quality of life for all our residents.”
“Middlesex County has long recognized the invaluable role that parks play in fostering the well-being of its residents. Our commitment to preserving and expanding open spaces remains unwavering, fueled by the understanding that parks are not just amenities but essential elements that enrich the fabric of our community,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Charles E. Tomaro, chair of the County’s infrastructure Management Committee. “I commend everyone who’s worked on this project for their unrelenting efforts. Parks, no matter the size, make a big difference in our residents’ everyday lives.”
Middlesex County and the City of Perth Amboy, first announced plans to develop the former County Office of Public Works Garage site into a pocket park in November 2021. This project is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2024.
